I think of beaches and relaxation, warm weather.
"Anyone who has been to Oaxaca Mexico will tell you that it is one of their favorite destinations in Mexico. Oaxaca is a city rich in history with Spanish colonial buildings, sidewalks made of green volcanic stones, 2500 year old ruins ruins like Monte Alban, great restaurants with traditional Oaxacan cuisine, and festivals like the "Day of the Dead" which combine to create a vacation experience full of the flavor of Mexico that most tourists can only hope to experience.
The heart of Oaxaca Mexico is the zocalo which is full of restaurants with a view. It's a great place to relax and watch the endless stream of tourists, businessmen, street vendors, and locals. The odds of a finding a band playing, street musicians, or preparations for a festival are pretty good here. And the atmosphere in the Oaxaca zocalo at night makes it a favorite place for couples.
The Oaxaca valley has been inhabited for thousands of years. The ruins at San Jose Mogote (now just a collection of mounds), just a few kilometers north of Oaxaca Mexico dates back over a thousand years BC. The height of civilization in the area, however, can be seen at the ruins of Monte Alban which overlooks the Oaxaca Valley. Monte Alban seems to have been the dominant city in the area from around 450 BC to 700 AD. By 800 AD, the city of Monte Alban was abandoned while the cities of Mitla and Yagul continued to grow and prosper until the arrival (conquest) of the Spaniards.
One of the most valued experiences in Oaxaca is visiting the various Indian villages. Some are famed for the Zapotecan rugs, while others for the black clay pottery which is only found here in the Oaxaca valley.
So whether your reasons for falling in love with Oaxaca are based on the Spanish colonial architecture, the market, the beautiful zocalo, the nearby ruins, or indigenous crafts, Oaxaca has something that will reach your soul and bring you back again and again."

I'm going to assume you mean the city, not just the beach area in the state. If you're going, take some comfortable shoes because in Oaxaca, you'll want to walk everywhere. It's a beautiful place and the people are gracious.
The beaches are very nice, less touristy than others. The nude beach, Zipolite, is at Puerto Angel. Puerto Escondido has both inexpensive and higher-end accomodations. A side trip to Manialtepec is well worth it.

Oaxaca is the most beautiful colonial city in Mexico and there are great archaeological sites nearby. If you like to take calculated risks, its typical cuisine is one of the best in Mexico.
There has been some political turmoil recently, but the city is as beautiful as ever.
