they are easy so don't worry too much. i keep mine in 2 1/2 gallon tanks with no filters and clean them weekly. i like the tanks because they give them room to swim around and you can put a hood with a light on it to see your lil guy better. you can buy a kit at walmart or a pet shop or get a rectangular tank and hood separately. the kits usually run about 20-30 dollars and i get the tanks and hoods at petsmart for about 10.00 for the tank 13.00 for the hood and light.

if you keep your house cool they are better with a small heater. they prefer temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. if you do too don't worry about the heater. a tank with a light acutally warms them up a bit too.

bettas love a well decortated tank. it gives them things to swim around and through and hide out in. think "betta playground" when decorating. Big leafed silk plants that hit the top of the water are a great choice. just make sure the decorations won't tear up your betta's fins.

live plants help make up for no filtration. plants good for just plopping in a small tank or bowl are java moss, java fern, any of the anubias. you tie them to rocks or driftwood and drop them in -- easy!

food choices -- i stick to pellets -- if they don't eat them you can remove them easily. 6 pellets a day is usually enough. make it 2 or 3 meals. frozen bloodworms are a treat for a few days every couple of week or so.

the biggest time investment is the cleaning and when you get the hang of it its about 20 mins a week.

Great of you to ask first! Now that's using your head!!

A book about bettas would be a very nice thing to add to your shopping list at the pet store or even before you get your betta. TFH publications puts out a book titled Bettas by Marshall E. Ostrow that should be easy to get and not expensive at all. It would be a good thing for every betta owner to have.

For now read up on betta care at this website:

http://www.cbsbettas.org/petbetta.html

This is written by serious betta keepers for beginners like you. They will tell you the real facts and not try to sell you stuff you don't need. These are men and women with years and years of experience keeping and breeding bettas and that's the best way to learn how to start.

Best of luck with your betta, you are off to a great start already!

Some basics are keep your betta in at least a gallon tank w/ dechlored water. Be sure to cycle your tank, if you dont know what that means exactly here is a site http://www.worldcichlids.com/faqs/cycling.html
Test the water weekly for ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, hardness, alkalinity, and ph, I use Jungle brand 5 in 1 test strips for everything except ammonia, I use Jungle brand ammonia test strips for it, both available at walmart. Keep the temp between 76 and 80 degrees by using a heater, have a filter, use SILK NOT PLASTIC plants. The plastic ones will tear their fins.
Hope This Helps!!!!!!!
GOOD LUCK!!!!!! =)
