I presume you are asking what "sold his soul" means. It is short for sold his soul to the devil.

The "devil" helps him to get what he wants now -- the chairmanship. Later, the devil gets his soul.

Obviously, he didn't actually sell his soul to an actual devil. In the real world, it could mean that he owes someone evil or immoral a favor and will have to pay it back whenever that person wants.

Well, figuratively, he sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the chairmanship. Apparently if you sell your soul the devil would give you anything you want b.c your soul is like, precious.

The reference is to Dante's Inferno, but that's too esoteric for most people.

In today's inference, it means that he betrayed his own conscience to get something.

If I were say a Democrat, and I was for the war against the radical Muslims seeking to destroy America, but in order to get the chairmanship I changed my view on the matter, that would be selling my soul.

It also would be selling out this country, but that is another argument for another question.
