My mother had no idea she was in labor she got to the hospital and they told her she was ready to push, with my older sister and my younger brother. With me she had a little pain. I'm worried that I will be like her and not get to have an epi..........I'm sure i'd be fine without it, but I don't want to feel the "ring of fire"

You are actually better off without the epidural or any pain medications...They can increase your risk of c-section, which has a longer more painful recovery. (I know I had a very difficult labor, which ended in c-section!) I also know that they can inject pain meds right into the perineum, but that the medication actually reduces the elasticity of that skin making you more likely to tear!!! Everyone is different, as far as what happens during labor & delivery. Try walking & drinking Red Raspberry Tea to prepare as well as stretching...

A great book on labor & delivery is:
"The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by Henci Goer.

Here is what it says straight from the book listed above: “Don't allow injection of a local anesthetic into the perineum on a "just in case" basis. The liquid swells the local tissues, reducing elasticity. Your partner should watch for the birth attendant picking up a syringe.”

It also says:

“Avoid an epidural. Epidurals increase the odds of episiotomy, instrumental vaginal delivery, and of a baby that persists in the posterior position (facing your belly instead of your back.)”

I wish I had, had this book with my first pregnancy, but I am glad that I have it as I prepare to conceive for a second time!

With my first child i was in labor for about 3 hours. I was induced and told this may have made the labor go faster. Labor time just varies from person to person. With my labor all i had was the gas and that was enough for me. And i found it's not the pushing part that hurts but the contractions before hand that hurt the most.

Unfortunately there's no way to tell if your labor is going to be quick and "painless" or long and "labored." Every woman is different. Every birth is different. You HAVE To trust your body and the doctors.

I was in labor for 24 hours before I went in for an emergency c-section. It wasn't planned, but it saved my life and my son's life, though he was born prematurely.

Also, don't go into labor thinking it will be fast. Brace yourself for a long labor, an epidural, and IVs. Birth isn't pretty, and you WILL feel pain.

I wouldn't be so worried about the "ring of fire". Yes it is painful but only for a short time.
The doctors tried to give me an epidural and I wish they hadn't. That needle is painful and I ended up having a migraine for a straight week not to mention it only froze my feet!! Not fun with a newborn.

Sounds like a high pain tolerance may run in your family :P. there is absolutely no way to tell how quick your labor will be until you actually go into labor. Sorry, and good luck!

There's no way of knowing. And if it's the same for you as it was for your mother, be very thankful! You won't even need an epidural!!!

I had one with an epidural and one without.....I definitely recommend the epi, but you'll be fine without it, too!

No way of knowing ahead of time. My mom's water broke 2 weeks early and she only dialated to 8cm and had a difficult delivery. I had a relatively easy delivery with my daughter, but it hurt like hell. Every person and every pregnancy is different.

No, just try to get to the hospital before it is time to push.
