1. Did the cardinal endure the severe winter?

2. In New York City, Thanksgiving Day is marked by a big parade.

How do I rewrite these sentences into passive voice? Thanks for the help.

The main hallmark of a passive voice sentence is that things just 'seem to happen'. In a normal sentence, the subject of the sentence obviously performs whatever the verb is. But a passive one is almost backwards.

(normal) The boy dropped the glass.
(passive) The glass was dropped by the boy.

Calling it backwards is perhaps very appropriate, because a passive sentence makes the object the centre of the sentence. To rewrite the ones you provided:

(normal) Did the cardinal endure the severe winter?
(passive) Was the severe winter endured by the cardinal?

The second sentence is actually already passive.

(passive) In New York City, Thanksgiving Day is marked by a big parade.
(normal) In New York City, a big parade marks Thanksgiving Day.

You can see in the normal version of the first sentence, the cardinal is DOING something. It's a bit of a stretch, but you might imagine him seeking out winters to endure. In the passive version you can't imagine that - there is just one winter and it was just already presumed to be there, so it's more like things just happen on their own.

You can see the same in the parade question. In the normal version, it seems like the parade is specifically marking Thanksgiving. In the passive, the day is marked. It might almost be a coincidence.

It's hard to describe, but you get used to seeing it if you look at them enough. In English, the passive voice has to have a version of 'is' and a past tense verb, but that's not a dead giveaway. Hope that helps!

Was the severe winter endured by the cardinal? (Not in question form: The severe winter was endured by the cardinal).

I think #2 is already passive voice. Active voice would be: A big parade marks Thanksgiving day in New York City.

The passive voice is when the past participle of a verb (like looked, run, seen, written, etc) is combined with the verb "to be", to form a sentence. For example, "Bob read a book" is simply past tense. "The book was read by Bob" uses the passive tense. (Incidentally, the passive voice is not considered very good form in writing...) Sentence number 2 already uses the passive voice. "is marked". You'll often see the word "by" in a sentence using the passive voice, such as "the boring dinner was endured by my children". So, knowing this, I'll let you fill in sentence #1.

In English, the active voice is preferred over the passive voice because it gives a stronger voice. Example: Active: Jane played the violin. Passive: The violin was played by Jane. In active sentences, the subject is performing the verb, but in passive sentences the subject is receiving the action of the verb.
