You are right about the photo referring to light, the second part is synthesis, a word from the family of words like synthesize.Synthesis is NOT breaking down, rather it is more the opposite. In a synthesis, something is made from simpler components. In photosynthesis water and carbon dioxide are reacted using chlorophyll to assist in the reactions to form carbohydrates and giving off oxygen as the by-product. This of course is what has allowed our species to dominate the planet... we live off their by-products.

Synthesis mean to make something, or two reactants = 1 substance.
In the case of photosynthesis, it is the process of using light energy and changes into a form of chemical energy that the cell than can breaks it down and produce usable energies for its normal everyday function.

Synthesis means building up sugar (glucose, fructose, starch) out of carbon dioxide and water. Plants do it, mediated by chlorophyll and light.

if you are talking about plants, the photosynthesis is the process that the plants take in from light like we do food. It's what makes them flourish, grow, and become healthy.

synthesis is the process of breaking it down, just think of digestion in us
