I don't get the feeling anyone who answered you has been there for various reasons, so I'll tell you what I saw:
1. It is unbelievably safe. I went wandering one night and found myself on a completely deserted area behind 2 women. Instead of being nervous like they would have if this was happening in my own hometown, they just laughed and talked. They had no fear, because it is so safe there. Islamic law is a little rough on criminals, even suspects, and it makes for a very safe society.
2. You probably won't blend in with them, even if you do physically, you won't because of your clothes. Very pleasant peolpe will figure out you're american and yell things to try to get your attention (I'm black so they'd yell about how great Muhammad Ali was) so they can sell you something. They've gotten very good at telling where people are from, they can differentiate from white americans and white germans for exmaple. The sales process is far from pushy, they offer you tea, act very friendly towards you then hope you buy something.
3. Egyptians are unbelievably kind people, they are very friendly and welcoming. The only people I've met anywhere who were as nice or nicer than them were in Brazil and Thailand.
4. As friendly as they are, they will raise the prices on everything once they figure out you're american! Be prepared to bargain, especially if you go to the Khan al Khalili (biggest bazaar).
5. You do have to be careful about drinking water (has to be bottled) or consuming any dairy products. You also have to be careful about food bought from street vendors, or fruit that may have been washed in local water (they can handle it, we can't).
I think you and your father will be very glad you took this trip and look back on it fondly for years. Cairo is one of my favorite cities in the world.

Cairo is the city that never sleeps. Egypt is the land of all humans and the mother of the world as we (Egyptians) call it. It's safe as long as you don't think you are among angels. I will not tell much about buying from touristic shops in general .. just try to know exactly the price everywhere and bargaining is very useful specially in Khan El Kahlily which I think you'll like very much. You can visit Khan El Khalily around the 24 hours and enjoy that area.
People are very friendly and kind, but not sellers. Try to have many Egyptian friends as possible as you'll always feel you like to come back and know about Egypt. Just select your friends to be cultured and educated people who speaks good English. Not the waiter, driver, houseman, bellman .. etc. I respect everybody for sure but it'll not be pure friendship. Also try to wear suitable clothes which is not sexy specially if you are not with a group of tourists otherwise it'll be considered as an inviting attitude which you'll not like it's reaction. In Egypt men are quite hot but at the same time they tend to protect women in general. They are good lovers and friends. If you speak American may be you'll not feel much difference, but there will be a negative difference.
Take much photos as you can and visit all possible places and think about places you may think to visit in the next trip to Egypt.
Wish you a lovely stay in Egypt

It's really worthy coming to Cairo.. Safety is not an issue now..the unrest is over and some political demonstrations in only one place is not a big evil! The country is all yours.. you are free and safe to move from Cairo to Alexandria to Luxor and from Aswan to Red Sea resorts of Sharm Elsheikh to Hurghada and again up to the Mediterranean North coast... Enjoy it!

Be very aware of the heat, in June and July there it gets to like 41 degress's. You can die of heat. Do not drink the water you will get so sick! As long as your hair is not blonde you should be o.k. but do not go anywhere alone. I have brown hair and the men were all over me. It is revoluting. There are a lot of gaurds in white ( You will see them they are everywhere) they are very friendly and helpful so ask them! P.S th epeople are very kind

Yah you Latina is safe in going to Cairo, Egypt, people there are so kind but take note don't you ever ever walk alone especially at night 'coz it might be dangerous. Before I forgot that place has no condom available.. so you might be wiser enough. okey? Take care when you get there.
