Ok so last week I brusied my wrist pretty badly but when I hit it I thought I broke it. Luckily I didn't but today I got a call from the doc telling me I have a widening of the radial bone. Well I'm not a med student and I have not a clue what they mean. Can someone fill me in before I go and have it checked out.

A widening of the radial bone can occur if there is a small fracture (break) in the bone that was not seen on the X-ray initially and it may mean that there is a significant amount of bleeding in the bone due to a break that did not show. There are some subtle signs in x-rays that lead to a diagnosis of a fracture and widening of the bone is one of them. Did he recommend that you have a follow-up with an orthopedist? If so, it is because there is probably a break there and it is a subtle one, or there is a lot of bleeding. Probably you will have a repeat X-ray in 7-14 days after the swelling has subsided and the fracture will be visible, if not a bone scan can show it. If you are young and your growth plates have not fused yet (at the ends of your bones), such a fracture could require surgery
If he gave you a splint, use it until you are seen again!

There are good drawings available in the Grey's Anatomy book online now, at least it will help you understand some terms. Another good site is The Hand Surgery Center website. Meanwhile try not to use that hand as much as you are able..

well im not too sure. sounds like (im not being sarcastic ok) your radial bone is wider than usual. your radial bone is one of the two bones on your fore arm. it is the one on the inside (thumb side) so i'm guessing your bone is badly bruised
