You need 1 acre per large animal (cow, horse) in most states. Cows need a lot of roughage and water available at all times. Go to a local meat auction and you'll be able to pick up a calf rather cheap. I would go with a Jersey steer. They stay fairly sized and are super friendly.

There is no way you can keep a full-grown cow in your backyard. If you had a ranch, that would be a different story. They graze continually and you'd need a shelter or barn to keep him in when it gets cold and rainy. Why would you want a cow anyway if you weren't in the agricultural industry?

Law says you can't have any kind of livestock unless you have at least 1 acre, not counting the acre your house is sitting on. B4 you get that cow, talk to farmers, ranchers, anyone who has cattle and can give you lots of tips/advice on them. Reading up on them helps alot as well. The library has all kinds of books on livestock and would be your best source for reading.

You will need at least an acre per cow. Contact the extension system in your state. They'll have all the information you need.
Find yours at : http://www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension/index.html

You can't keep a cow in a backyard! They need plenty of space to roam, like a field. It would be cruel to keep her confined.
