Here are some of my favorite indie/unknown bands:
Ill Lit - something completely different, I'm obsessed with this band
"ill lit gives us songs that are elegies of American lostness, road music for a new breed of pioneers. Any person who is no longer young, and not yet old: rootless human beings of scattered family, no land, and only a home away from no-home. Who are nonetheless burdened with lustful urges to build something, somewhere; to say something, to someone: to call out of the ruins of all this glorious f*ked-up American freedom we own." - Sound Collector
"a pop-perfect bit of alt-country, beset by a frail, ethereal synth whisper, like a ghost shooting through the farm, blowing up stalks of hay before finally crashing face-first into a wall" - Pitchfork Media
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zachariah and the Lobos Riders - "country-rock...full of beautiful lyricism, witty wordplay and overall unique flavor", "Ghost Signs" is the greatest album I've purchased in a long time
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Old 97's - alt-country-rock; sweaty, bar band sound with a little pop finesse and hard rock, addictive
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sodajerk - "....a blend of old school country with the raw enthusiasm of The Replacementes", "Combining elements of honky-tonk, alt-country and early '90s alternative, Sodajerk's gritty songs about drinking and hard times sound like a cross between Lucero and The Pixies. The band's leanings are definitely more towards the country side, but you also can't help but hear various other rock influences thrown in the mix. "---Prick Magazine
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joy Thompson -singer/songwriter, accoustic pop, beautiful effin' voice
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ditty Bops - "clearly fond of parlor songs, folk ditties and light, jazzy swing of the early 20th century...organic, mostly accoustic instrumentation and old school vibe belie the music's edginess and eccentricity", way too much fun
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ferraby Lionheart - singer/songwriter; indie/folk/pop, sexy voice
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joshua Radin - hushed, delicate vocals, introspective, incredibly sexy voice
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins (greatest album of last year) - vocalist from Rilo Kiley, debut solo album "Rabbit Fur Coat" drips with rainy day ambience, her voice is sexy and beautiful and completely addictive
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Violent Femmes - folk-country-jazz-pop-rock-punk 3 piece band, if you've never heard them, I highly suggest this band to you
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damien Rice - irish singer/songwriter, folk, makes me want to tear my heart out of my chest
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Weepies - sentimental, melodic folk pop with harmonius vocals and gently picked guitars, beautiful songs, they make me smile

My apologies if I name some bands that you already know.
Oh No! Oh My!
Tapes 'n Tapes

The Notwist
Check out my profile on here for a good list of indie rock groups that you may or may not have heard already. :)
By the way, what bands do you already listen to that are indie? Because I could suggest some more that you may not have heard yet.

If you want to become a better singer, improve your singing voice and are considering an online course I strongly recommend this site:
http://howtosing.toptips.org
I am big fan of this online singing course. You can watch a video more times until you can grasp each concept. Even if the program runs on a 10-day period, you can spend more or less, depending on your own pace. All the guides and tools included in this program are designed by professionals. This means you will learn transitions, changes and voice modification techniques like a pro! It comes with a plethora of exercises, allowing you to improve any aspect of your voice.
It definitely the best alternative to expensive lessons with vocal coaches. Try it and you'll see great results!

They're not very new, but the New Pornographers are definitely worth a listen. Also, Sufjan Stevens is a genius, (especially his album, "Come on Feel the Illinoise") and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a great rock band.

A great band is probably a matter of taste.
However community-driven sites like http://www.jamendo.com/ can help you to discover indie music. If you rate the music you listen to, it can also suggest you new bands accordingly to your assessment.
