Mice are very small and weigh only a few ounces. Wild mice will be very furry this time of year. They are not tame, disease carriers (keep in mind, they are different from domestic mice, which actually make very good pets) Rats are pretty big and wild ones are yucky and mean, also much unlike domestic rats, which are also fabulous pets. Leave them outside!

Mice are small - usually only a few ounces, and about 1 to 2 inches long. Rats are a fair bit larger. Rats and mice both have long tails, but the rat's tail is hairless. Mice have shirt hairs on their tails. If the tail is short and stubby, you might have a mole, or a chipmonk (usually with little white strips downits back.) Or it could even be someone's pet hamster that escaped (they're pretty good at it).

mouse is small, kinda cute... typically young
rat is larger, older.. both have long tails
if its outdoors it could be a mole (has a very short tail) or wolf rat.. they are huge and mean. field mice are smaller.
Either way, if its in/ or near your wood pile, its probably building a nest for the winter.. which means MORE!!! Call exterminator!!
Good luck

A mouse is smaller than a rat that's lots larger. many times rats are available in to your place, mouse do not run around in each single place, so if one critter all of sudden met your place it can be a Rat.

Size is the only difference. Rodents are very hardy animals. They can withstand cold temperatures as long as they are out of the wind and huddled up with others.

Give them some mulch, cotton, or torn up newspapers. They were doing just fine without us for millions of years.
