i installed a maxtor 300gb harddrive in my computer, i wanted to know if it came partioned from the factory. when i defrag it shows that i have 128 gb available on C drive where are the other 172 gbs. i assume they are dispersed through the other drives, is this correct??
if not how do i recover the missing 172 gbs.

some of it is taken up by programs or the drive is formatted wrong.

Open my computer (desktop or start menu) righ click on your C: drive leftclick properties, the numbers should be closer there (when added up) to the 300 gig. If you have only 280 or so that is because of different way of calculating disk space, and somehow manufacturers use the one that looks best.

I have a partitioned harddrive and there are drives going down to I (D,E,F,G,H,I). You can store certain files on these drives and they will be unaffected by what happens on the C, a safer alternative to having all files on one drive. In the case of a virus it will attack the C but then the rest of your files will remain immune in whatever drive they are stored.

Are you sure your BIOS supports, any drive larger than 138GB?
