I am sorry, but the previous answer is not correct.

When an alkaline earth metal reacts with water it forms a metallic hydroxide plus hydrogen gas. Calcium is higher on the activity series than hydrogen, so it will displace the hydrogen from the water, but not both of them.

calcium + water ---> calcium hydroxide + hydrogen gas

Ca + 2 H2O ---> Ca(OH)2 + H2
