Well, gasoline is a component in crude oil, so it would be the crude oil that was pumped. Most of the oil was very easily accessable, even sitting around in oil lakes and tar pits. Much of it in the US came from California and Texas. The refineries were built very near the oil fields, and close to a transportation point such as a sea port, so the pipelines didn't have to be very long. These refineries still exist and function today, although they have been revised and upgraded. The oil fields that were close to the refineries have pretty much been pumped dry, and now most of the crude comes from fields far away.

Gasoline was refined in small refinery's untill Standard Oil began to improve on the process and developed distribution systems. Standad oil became Standard oil of Ohio in 1911. More on the web site
