Sterotypes
well most are not that true. Infact some of them are just down right offensive.
Okay I am a Kenyan, and i come from Africa, unless you come from Africa, or you have visited, the first thought that MAY come to mind is "they walk around naked" It is amazing how much i have heard that question. And the sterotype is parially true. There are SOME tribes that dont wear clothes, or wear minimal clothing. Most developed cities (and yes there are developed cities in Africa) people go around in suits.
That sterotype only applies to a small percentage of people who come from Africa.
Another sterotype is that Africans live in trees (where someone got this one is beyond me) I can tell you that I have lived in Africa quite a long time, but i have not seen anyone that lives in trees.
Just a few examples.
Imagine how someone like me who has to be hit with those sterotypes can feel on a daily basis. Its not exactly fun. People need to be able to tell the difference between curiosity and actual sterotypes that can hurt.

Gypsy stereotypes. Please notice that many of these stereotypes contradict each other.

We all:

1) steal and are con artists
2) are dirty
3) live in horse-drawn wagons in caravans
4) curse everyone and a GYPSY curse always works
5) steal babies to put in our stew-pots or sell to carnivals
6) are all inbred
7) read the Tarot, read palms, tell fortunes, etc.
8) play the violin and/or tamborine
9) are all happy-go-lucky hippies
10) live on the dole and are too lazy to work
11) do not even exist
12) look alike
13) dress in flashy, trashy "Gypsylike" clothes... I am certain you have seen the like.
14) are all psychic.
15) live in trashy mobile homes or the like.

I am certain I am missing some.

The truth:

Some Rromani still live a semi nomadic lifestyle, most do not. The nomadic lifestyle is very traditional and is not followed much anymore. We live wherever and however we wish. I live in a nice home from the 1870's, for example.

Some prefer to dress more traditionally and, no, traditional dress is NOT what most people associate with "Gypsy" but it would be considered exotic. Most of us dress like everyone else.

Some Rromani read the Tarot, tell fortunes, or whatnot. Most do not. Gadje (non-Rromani) read Tarot and whatnot as well. Unfortunately, many of the Gadje say they are "Gypsy" to ride on the Gypsy reputation.

You cannot just up and decide one day that "I'm a free spirit, now I am a Gypsy". Wrong. It is genetic. If you are not born a Rromani (or any of the other ethnicities under the umbrella term "Gypsy") you are not going to be one.

The biggie: Gypsies are all theives and con artists. Wrong. There is no higher instance of our theivery than Gadje theivery. If all of the crime attributed to us was actually PERPETRATED by us it would outnumber the actual adult and teenage Rromani population! There is much higher Rromani theivery in some European nations where Rromani are DENIED education and jobs. In America it is completely false.

Toss those stereotypes in the trash where they belong.

For that matter, take ALL stereotypes about ALL races, ethnicities, and peoples, and toss ALL of them in the trash... where they belong.

ALL races, ethnicities, and people have them. Discard all of that tripe and LEARN about the culture and/or people.

Jocks are partyers, blacks are lazy, asians are bad drivers.... The list could go on forever, but those are probably the most heard out there... and they are horrible. Sure, people live up to them, or down to them I should say, but in no way does it have to be true. The social stratification of our society is so sickening, that people from generation to generation continue to fall into the trap of sterotyping and being stereotyped. It needs to stop, and the only reason it keeps going is because everyone "goes with the flow" of society, continuing it in a downward spiral into injustice. I am strongly against stereotyping, because it tends to limit people to one aspect of their lives, and after being brought up into it, most people believe it, and even fall into it themselves. I could go on forever, but that's the core of the issue.

I think stereotypes are things we learn from the media. If you watch tv you can learn that all gay men are efeminate and talk with a lisp and dress really well..... But that is not true of all gay men. It is only true of all tv gay men. Cheerleaders are always blonde, perky, mean and wear their uniforms every day at school. Well, that one is close, jk.

I am a Christian, and I've never once seen a Christian in the media that is anything like myself or anyone else I know that is a Christian. The media always casts them as idiotic prudes with no common sense, and who have no fun except going to bible studies. I find that to be greatly off base.

Or - I am a girl, but I don't like pink, make-up, dresses, shoes, tea parties, dieting, and all that other stuff. I like baseball and football and eating greasy fattening foods and I don't sit around all day hoping a cute boy will call me.

You can find people of ethnicities who fit stereotypes about them, and those that don't. Its better to do your best to accept each person as an individual. I have friends who are a bi-racial couple. He is Black, she is white. Whenever they throw a party, all the white people party in one room and all the Black people party in another one. Why? The only explanation I can come up with is that people are more comfortable around people who they have experience being around. For the most part, white people live and work among white people, so they are unfamiliar with Black people. Some stereotypes that Black people have concerning white people are actually pretty humorous. But it would be better if people could get past stereotyping.

Sterotypes are based off generalization. They most of the time are true, but not always.

I have many lesbians friends, and they are all so different in so many different ways I don't even know where I would begin. The only things they seem to share in common is that they all LOVE Tegan And Sara and watch The L Word. I am not a lesbian and I listen to Tegan And Sara, and watch The L Word... so doesn't really say much about them I suppose ahaha x

Stereotyping is the process of taking a truthful characteristic, personality, or physical look of an individual, or several individuals of a group, and then type casting, and defining the entire group with the type. Its an error!!!

All sorority girls are dumb blonde bimbos who stay drunk all the time and keep their feet behind their ears.

Not true. As a former sorority girl, I can say that we are highly educated college graduates who go on to hold careers, and as a group, we are very involved in community service.
