We will be hiring a young lady to do some filing--extremely part time, like 1/2 day now and then. I am looking for a simple (cheap!) software program for figuring her payroll. Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention that I am in California. I appreciated the free software that one member referred to, but it was for Australia! (thanks anyway!!)

I am an Accountant and have worked with many types of software. I would recommend Quick Books for small business. it is easy to use and very user friendly. It will even help you with figuring the taxes to take out of her check. I don't know how many employees you have now, but I would set them all up on this system. It makes 941's, etc so much easier.

Honestly for a 1/2 day now and then, like if it is extremely now and then I would not mess with it. Give her cash honey. The amount you will pay her is not even worth the effort of trying to claim it as an expense on your books. Don't give her a check or anything like that. Let her know the taxes are her responsibility is she so chooses. If you really wanted to you could 1099 her later if you are too scared to do that. There are reporting laws I won't get into (like when you need to report for what amounts, etc...), but that is really meaninless to spend that money and time if she is going to work say 4 hours a month. Just give her cash. You don't need software for that. You can just use a calculator. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Take care!
