In drawing, is it really always important to follow proper lightings and shadings in coloring??, becAUse when i tone any art, i am not following any proper lightings and shadings.., i just put highlights in any directions, or whateverkind of highlight that i imagin. Is it ok??, or should i refrain from this doing??

aNOTHER thing, is it right to create my own style in drawing characters??, i mean i should create something new, aside from drawing anime. You know, i really love drawing anime/cartoons, and this has been my childhood hobby, and i've always tried to improve my art in drawing anime. But then, should i have to create something new??

Hey there, ah, as a comic book artist myself, its great to want to illustrate, even in manga. But what you should do is either take some anatomy classes or pick up an anatomy book, especially ones by burne hogarth, he is the godfather of comic book anatomy and any comic book artist worth his salt learned from him.....

If your just drawing for your own personal enjoyment then you can shade what ever way your heart desires.
Shading in a consistant or I guess 'correct' way is just a better way of describing form and creating 3dimentionality.
The funny thing about style is it's hard to create your own. The best thing to do is learn to draw and your style will develop itself. If you want to learn to draw anything well you should try drawing from life. learn perspective, lighting, color, composition, gesturem and if your interested in characters then certainly anatomy as well. If you learn these things then you can draw anything. if you learn to draw from things like anime you will limit yourself because it is so styalised.
The more you know about fine arts the better you will be at any style you choose wether it be anime, comic, realism, or some style you develop on your own.
The most important thing is to enjoy yourself no matter what your doing. Art should be an enjoyable part of life, not a chore even for someone like myself who aspires to find a job in the art world.

If you plan a career in art, then it's very important to follow the rules so that you don't develop bad habits that will be hard to break later. By a career in art I mean commerical art, or portraits, etc. It you plan to create and sell fine art or even pop art, the rules still apply. It's best to keep to the rules until you hit college or until you are comfortable with the rules, then BREAK'em, bust out into your own style. If you don't learn the rules, and keep to your own style, one day you will get an idea for a picture, but you won't be able to fully create your idea because you won't be able to fall back on the rules for guidance. Let's say you want to create a particular kind of sky, but it looks wrong, why? it looks wrong because your eye and mind are telling you it's not a natural effect, and you can't create the un-natural until you learn how to create the natural.
Take the advice of Salvadore Dali, study the master's, learn the rules, then break them.

I personally think proper lighting and shading always makes art look more realistic (although I struggle with the concept, or so my art teacher tells me) and so I don't think stuff shouldn't just go in -any- direction, you know?

new and original styles are great and even manga/anime artists have their own styles (well, the best ones always do, anyway). You can still do that type of drawing with your own style.

Well, shading is a great way to make whatever your drawing more dimensional, but your not always going to get it. Maybe get taught by someone who knows how to shade. You can draw your own style, actually I recommend you create tour own style.
