If you decide that you want to get your friend a gecko, I would do the fun thing...buy her (or him) a gift card. Go to www.petsmart.com and print out a care guide for the type of gecko you want. Leopard gekos, house geckos, golden geckos...they all need different things. here's an estimate on the cost:

tank: $10-30
Screen top: $9-20
Basking lamp: $11
Basking bulb: $9 or Infared Heat Emitter: $30
Night bulb (not needed if getting heat emitter): $9
cave or hiding structure: $5-15
Substrate or reptile carpet: $5-15
UVA/UVB Slimline bulb and strip light: $38 or....
Strip light $20 and Bulb $24
plants and deco: $15
water dish: $4
Gecko: $8-90 depending on the gecko

When you purchase a pet as a gift, it is a bad gift if the person needs to go out and buy things for it. Also, it can be fatal to the gecko if the proper housing is not 100% set up before he goes into his new home. This is why i recommed gift cards.

What I suggest to people is that they buy as much as they can of the set up as possible. Things like the deco (which is needed to hide in and reduce stress) and the pet are more fun if the person gets to go pick it out.

Go to petsmart or the website and ask for two care guides. Reptile lighting and the care guide on the type of gecko you are getting. Read and understand them well. Also keep in mind that they are insectivores...they eat bugs, and your friend will have to go buy them to feed the gecko.

Either go the gift card route and let your friend make the decisions, or find a different gift. But be prepared to spend around $70-150 for the set up alone.

$29.99 In nature, leopard geckos eat insects, spiders, worms and grubs. However, in captivity, the primary foods for leopard gecko are crickets. If you would like to make your leopard geckos happy and healthy, then do not feed your leopard geckos with crickets all the time. Feeding geckos with waxworms and mealworms would be a good dietary plan. Size of crickets is the main problem to feeding gecko. Hatchling cannot take adult crickets, 2 week-old crickets are recommended. Adult geckos can handle all size of crickets. If you are sourcing your crickets from pet shop, make sure the crickets are clean and healthy. If you are breeding your own crickets, make sure that you do not feed moldy food to your crickets; it will cause serious health problems. Water Supplies Even leopard geckos are dessert lizard, it doesn’t mean that they do not need drinking water. Ensure there is fresh and clean water supplied at all time. Shallow water dish is the best option. Change the water every day to prevent contaminated water with parasite and bacteria. Bottled water is better a better option than tap water as tap water might consists of chlorine and other chemicals which is not good for leopard geckos drinking. Supplement and Vitamins Supplement and vitamin are important factor for leopard gecko health. One of the good recommendations is supplement the diet with 1.3 ratio of herptivite to rep-cal calcium with D3. You can shake and coat the supplement and vitamins onto crickets or other prey to feed your leopard gecko. Do this every day for hatchling, and reduce the frequency the leopard geckos grow.

It would depend on what type. It can range from $20 to $50. Then you will need the right sized aquarium, bedding (don't use newspaper it's bad for geckos), lighting, crickets, meal worms, calcium supplement, shallow water dish, shallow food dish, and so on. So after all that like $150 to $200.

For the gecko, $30. For all the stuff she's going to need to house and care for it, at least $150 more. I would consider a non-living creature as a present- reptiles can be costly to maintain properly, and it's cruel to buy an animal and let it suffer or die.

If you use Geico auto insurance, they throw a talking gecko in for free. ; - ).
Seriously, why do you want a gecko? When I lived in the Philippines we had them living on our walls eating mosquitos (which was a good thing), but why do you want to have one in a cage?
How about a nice beta? They don't seem to mind swimming around on their own and they are pretty to look at.

I would reconsider getting a pet for a present, unless your friend is prepared for it.

She will need to get housing for it (and a proper aquarium can be costly), plus proper substrate materials, heating etc. Also she will have to feed it. Gekos can be a lot of work and responsibility.
