Tobacco generates a lot of revenue, whilst the advertising of old got everyone addicted it generated an awful lot of money in tax for the government as well as plenty for the manufacturers.

Now it is realised that a lot of smoking related illnesses are costing the country / National Health a lot more money in keeping people hooked on tobacco that to get them off it.

Problem arises in how to replace the lost revenue?................

First option was extended opening hours in pubs etc - quickly realised that would generate possible alcohol related illnesses.

I did wonder what the government would think of next to replace the lost revenue..............

Super Gambling Casinos and all the fringe tax generating sidelines that may involve, gambling, smoking, drinking, sex, drugs etc. etc.

Let us not forget that most politicians with their exorbitant salaries also have a finger in allot of pies so more money in their pockets.

In answer to your question they won't stop selling tobacco because it means money - they will just keep piling on that tax.

If the government banned it then it would be like prohibition in the US the cirminals would be celebrating all the way to the bank.It wouldnt stop smokers just make a new underground industry to rival the drugs trade.Instead of gaining tax revenues they would end up spending a fortune to try and enforce it.

I figure that if the government does ban smoking it will put people out of jobs. Not just in the tabacco industry. There are other peripheral industries that cater to the tabacco industry as well as their own, respectively. Such as paper, plastics, even steel. Not to mention the tool makers.
How many more jobs do they want to take away from this country? Eroding the tax bases all the more.

The government may just care about your health and the cost to everyone else because you choose to kill yourself this way. The government doesn't sell cigarettes. They are made and sold by private companies. Since cigarettes are taxed it is a source of income. Why would they want to get rid of a source of easy money?

I think its called free will.
But the health costs of smoking far exceeds the tax revenue from cigarettes. Not to mention the productivity costs. I bet you the government is not the only one who wants you to quit.

Why don't you shut up - they are bad enough already. The bars in Scotland are shutting down and the ones that aren't are bloody miserable places now.

We now have talking posters telling us to Wash our Hands - I did that already without some patronising tosser telling me so.

Don't give these Nazis ideas!

Selling tobacco? How about they stop subsidizing tobacco? If you want to smoke, its a personal choice, but I don't think gov. should be subsidising tobacco farmers.

Besides, they stop selling tobacco legally and it'll become yet another illegal "drug" sold on the black market.
