Hi Sweet Cherry Girl! Usually I keep my laptop for at least three (3) years and sell it after that. Try to get the one with the higher specs so you won't spend more money upgrading it. Battery life is at least 18 months so on the 3rd year you will have battery problems. If you reach the 3rd year that meant that your investment is fully paid. That is what we call computer time used. Getting a new laptop on the 3rd year is already advisable and the cycle repeats. Good luck and hope I helped a little. Cheers!

Well if you invest over a thousand dollars on a laptop I would think it would last you a couple of years. Desktops last over 5 years and although laptops are smaller and portable and face more transporting and environment impacts I would hope it could last you a good 3 years. I have a Dell inspiron 700m which i purchased a year and a half ago. I hope it could last me a very long time.
You should only decide to buy a new one if you absolutely have to buy a new one for one reason or another.
You may want to consider if you have a laptop and its really old. The year and make, and especially the specs. You should look at the processors used, ram and so forth. If you feel its time you get a new one because everything is outdated and its running way too slow then yes get a new laptop.
For those people still running on those wireless cards you insert, those laptops are old and some should be replaced. My laptop is wireless and no extra wireless card to lug around. Its super convenient.
Other things to look at is to see what you use your laptop for. If it is for work and you feel like you dont have enough memory or its just running slow and its too huge to lug around. Maybe its time to find a local retail shop. My laptop is 13inches and super convenient.

I had my old one for 4 years... I'd recommend not keeping them that long though. I would guess that 2-3 years is a good life span for a laptop. Hope this helps.

I buy all computers to last 3 years. Pay the extra money upfront, and you won't need to upgrade. After 3 years, you can upgrade or replace and still have a decent back-up machine. If you go cheap, you will need to replace more often.
