We think it must be some type of sap from a tree - any suggestions?

Use WD-40 or try Vinegar.

After a year, the sap on the finish may be the least of your worries. You should have the vehicle thoroughly checked by your mechanic, and have all the fluids and filters replaced.

As for the sap, use bug and tar remover that you can purchase at your local auto parts store. If the bug and tar remover doesn't work, use polishing compound. No matter what you use, give it a good coat of wax when you're done.

TR-3 Resin Glaze. It takes oxidation, tar, bird droppings and tree sap off of your cars finish. It's good stuff.

I would try Dawn Power Spray, you can find it in the soap isle of your grocery store. Spray it directly on the spots and use a damp wash cloth(soft) to rub the spots off. I've tried it and it works!!!
