Is this a new sound card that isn't detected, or did your existing sound card suddenly stop being recognized? In the latter case, try powering off your machine (unplug it after shutdown) and restarting

As the earlier poster said, make sure motherboard built-in sound is disabled in the BIOS. Also, try moving the card to a different slot, and make sure it's in all the way. It should appear, probably as an unrecognized device until you install the drivers from the CD...

Did you install it all the way into its slot?

two things, first disable onboard sound which is prob enabled, then make sure you have the right drivers for it. sometimes the software that came with the card is outdated, go to maker of card for latest audio drivers
