By reporting the theft to the police, you father can utilize his homeowners insurance.

Can the police do anything? Of course. They can investigate to crime of theft. Normally, the police will ask a few questions on such a case and close it.

I would urge you to send out an email to the participants of the party and tell them that the laptop is missing and if it is returned no charges will be pressed. Chances are your laptop is long gone.

Good luck.

I wouldn't tell the cops unless you had a permit for this party. In some states or cities it's illegal to have that many people at a residence without having the proper permits and permission for parking etc. You might get issued a citation, but it all depends on whether you would rather get a small compensation for your laptop or get in trouble with the law.

Next time I suggest you don't invite people you don't know because people steal-especially from people they don't know. There is no way the cops are going out of their way to look up everyone at your party for a laptop. It's your loss, you should just take it and wise up next time.

You might as well report it. They will not be able to really do anything right now. But if in the future you do find out through someone, who stole it, a police report will help a lot. That way you won't have to confront them directly.

I's love to say yes but in reality no theirs to many people and they have probably sold the computer by now but you may want to check ebay and see if one of the people at the party is selling a lap top.

I would report it only for the reason that you might need to in order to collect on your insurance. But the truth is that the police aren't going to do a thing.

Years ago, I unfortunately parked near a "housing project" notorious for drug users who smoke crack!! I of course locked my doors, and went into a business to take care of some of my bills I had to pay!! I had my infant daughter in my arms, came outside only to find my passenger side window SMASHED OUT, and the stainless steel briefcase with the phone inside of it GONE!! Well of course I went balistic, and noticed the druggies milling around and watching me freak out. After a few minutes I spoke out, and told these creeps, " I know one of you know who broke in my car and ripped me off for that silver briefcase!!, and I want you to spread the word that there is a hundred dollar reward for its safe return, one guy comes up to me and says, " Well, I "MIGHT' know who has it, and I'll get it back for ya. ( Yeah, right! It was probably HIM!!) I told him well you go see if you can get it back, and I'll go to the anytime bank and get the REWARD??? So, that I did... a middle age caucasian mommy, with baby in tow...I went to the ATM and got the money! Once I returned I notice this creep coming out of the nearby woods, WITH THE SILVER BRIEFCASE in a paper grocery bag!!! He came up and said "here ya go, I was able to get it back for ya!!">(yeah, right) He takes it out of the bag, and holds it in his one hand and reached out for the "REWARD!!!!", I told him, Oh, no,no,no!!! You reach out to get the money with one hand, and let me put my hand on MY PHONE!!! So, that was the insane way I got my valuable back. This was way back in the mid 80's when we didn't have the cheap little cell phones we have now!! This phone was VERY EXPENSIVE
and was built right into the brief case!! So after $100,00, and a phone call to the police to report my car window broken out, the whole nightmare was over!!! I had nearly forgotten that until I read your question!!! Soooo, in answer to your question, I would spread word that there is a "handsome reward" for its return, with no questions asked... I sure hope this helps!!! Its a mad, mad, mad, mad, world we live in ya know!!

The policeman is your friend. Tell him and he will help you. Besides, it will make it easier to file an insurance claim
