The Beatles. No matter what you say about talent or records or music, the world lost John Lennon in a fraction of a second because of a crazy person. The impact that it had on Beatles fans and people from that era will be remembered forever, giving the Beatles more of an iconic edge.
Aside from that...The beatles anyway.

In April 1964, the Beatles had the top five songs on the Billboard Top Ten. Nobody has achieved that before or since.
Beatles have probably sold more total albums than MJ, as well.

The Beatles, MJ is winding down, and generally speaking, the Beatles were more popular. I think their whole career was awesome, whereas Jackson now has some major issues which sort of cancel out any musical talent he had

You mention Michael Jackson in the same breath as The Beatles. The Beatles revolutionized society, they gave us more than great music, they brought freedom to be who you wanted, a new world where young people could speak their minds and aspire to great things, they opened our minds to all possibility, there will never be another like them. Michael Jackson is a mutation of a human being, he is a self absorbed eunuch who has no concern for society. Selling records is not a basis for greatness, it's the inspiration that you give to the world to make things better.

The Beatles were the best ever. Michael Jackson doesn't even come close. You have to remember also that hype like Jackson got wasn't around when the Beatles were, neither were C D's.

Beatles have more deep catalog. Sgt Pepper, the White Album, Rubber Soul, Revolver, etc.
Plus the Beatles have been able to maintain their image unlike Michael.

The Beatles have movies, led the British Invasion, and have a body of work equaled by no other artist to date. They created a fashion trend which is still being repeated today. John Lennon and his peace movement helped to formulate the still active blending of commerce and the peace movement through his compassionate grasp of combined spirits reaching out in love to humanity. It is without a doubt the Beatles.

Michael may have had a good run on album selling but the Beatles were more consistent. I think Michael has had a lot of publicity but quite frankly most of it has been scandals.
