Personally, I don't know either, and have no connections with any of the various groups claiming some association with the KKK (see Wikipedia on the subject), but I Googled KKK and found this on the site below:

The Knights definitely does not burn the cross, but we do light the cross. The lighted cross of The Knights is no different than the average church that has a lighted cross either on top or in front of their church building. The light of the cross symbolizes the Light of Christ dispelling darkness and ignorance. It is the fire of the cross that reminds us of the cleansing "fire" of Christ that cleanses evil from our land. The fiery cross is a symbol that has long been popular with the Christian faith, for example the Methodist denomination uses the fiery cross as their symbol.

We don't burn the cross, we Light the cross. We recognize that Christ is the light of the world.

The Klan adopted the fiery cross from the traditions of old Scotland where the fiery cross was used as a symbol against tyranny and often the hills of Scotland would be lit aglow with the lighted cross -the symbol of freedom - freedom from sin - freedom from tyranny. When a Klansman or Klanswoman participates in a cross lighting ceremony they are making a public declaration to Jesus Christ of their continued commitment to the Christian faith.

Actually, it has nothing to do with a religious statement or the idea that Jesus hates blacks or anything like that - at least not originally. It was only in the 1900s during the revival of the organization that they started doing it, and it was the result of some "documentary" made about the old KKK in which the creator thought it would make a really powerful scene or something to show them burning a cross. The members apparently agreed and decided to start doing it themselves.

Typically burning a cross was done by racist scum known as the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) a bunch of ignorant idiots who for some reason think the stupidest white people are superior to anyone...it was used to terrorize blacks, and now a days pretty much anyone else that these morons don't like. It is also used at various neo-nazi and white supremacists "rally's" (which are basically a bunch of drunk uneducated jackasses, running around in their mommy's laundry)

The cross obvioulsy is for christ, the burning is supposed to symbolize light (whiteness).

In my opinon, anything the KKK does is crazy, b/c we shld not discriminate agaisnt ppl. Anyway, I think they think that God prefers white ppl, so they burn them as like a message that God hates them, but I cld be wrong.
