I usually clean my computer by doing the following
1) Control Panel -> "add or remove programs"
this helps me get rid of programs I don't use or don't want.
2) Run Ad-aware and Spy-bot
this gets rid of crap that can slow my computer down, they are available for download on download.com for free. Install them, updated them, and then run them.
3) Start -> Programs -> accessories -> system tools -> disk cleanup
I run this about every week. let it run its course. then tell it to delete ALL the things it pulls up. This may take some time if you have never run this program before. That will free up some disk space on your hard drive.
4) Go through your "my documents", "my music", etc. Delete any old file or photos you no longer want. If you don't want to delete them, burn them to a disk or something. Then delete them from your computer. This will clean up some space as well.
When you are done, make sure you "empty" your recycle bin.
Then i run "disk defragmenter" which is found in the same area as the "disk cleanup" program. When you open defragmenter it will ask you which drive you want to defragement. Tell it your C: drive (or whichever is your HD), and let it run. When it is done, restart your computer.
If you computer is still running slow, and you are running XP, try "msconfig"... this is chancy though if you don't know what you are doing. Click Start-> RUN and type in "msconfig" without the "". It will open a window, click the "startup" tab. This is a list of ALL the programs that start up whenever you turn on your computer. I turn them ALL off except for Norton (which lists itself under the name "vptray") and spybot teatimer... once done, I restart again. Now i don't have alot of crap starting up whenever I start up my comp.
Make sure to run your Anti-virus too, cause some viruses are known to slow your computer down as well.'
Hope this helps.

If your computer starts to run slower than normal, it is probably because of a lot of unwanted temporary files, cookies and mismatched system registry files. Even if your computer is running normally you should install and run a system file cleaner program periodically. I use CCleaner which is freely available on the Internet. I downloaded it from CNET's web site and run it every week to keep my computer running smoothly. You should too.

Run the Disk Cleanup utility and then the disk Defragmenter utility. Both are found in the Control panel under Performance and Security. Also, go to Add/Remove Programs and get rid of anything that you don't use. You also may want to download any pictures or music to CDs to get them off of your hard drive.

My choice on computers even as old as Pentium 350Mhz with 256Mb RAM, to get 5500 NEW and FREE games and programs, and speed them up by upto50X, is to run http://pclinuxos.com
It can run live in the CDrom, and can be installed dual-boot or can take over the drive. Virus immune, faster, safe, stable. Take charge of your computer. Read the docs on the desktop. visit the forums.
Think outside the "microsoft box"!
