This is a weird question I know but why are some really old bands still popular? They aren't around anymore, they don't do concerts, some of the band members are really old or dead, no new songs, no new albums. It's weird. My brother is crazy about The Beatles, The Eagles, Roy Orbinson, Elvis, etc. And he's 17! Me on the other hand like The Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, AFI, My Chemical Romance, Bullet for my Valentine, Underoath, etc. So why are these old bands still popular? IT'S SO STUPID!

okay listen,
just because some bands are getting older it doesn't mean that you have to dis them. respect them, their the ones that started rock, punk, metal, goth, and others styles. you should understand that it's not stupid at all. what are you going to say if the bands now are getting older, are you going to say their stupid too? older bands can still put on a show.

All bands are influenced by older bands. All. So what you get now is essentially a watered down version of what went before. Some people can improve on the mix, some try and fail. There have been very few original bands, Elvis, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Sex Pistols, Happy Mondays, New Order, The Smiths, Stone Roses, KLF. These bands started a new type of music. Emo music is just a combination of old goth and the Smiths. one day you'll understand. By the way if you have never heard the Stone Roses listen to One Love. It'll blow you away

Omg...Sit down, young one....

Let me ask you this: Don't you think that the very fact that a 17 year old in 2007 even KNOWS the Beatles or The Eagles says something about the quality of the music?

Now if people are still talking about & listening to The Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, AFI, My Chemical Romance, Bullet for my Valentine, Underoath, etc in 30+ years, then YOU can tell some clueless 15 year old why they're relevant....But I don't think you'll have to.

IT ISN'T STUPID!!! You just don't appreciate good music. Who cares if the singers are dead or don't perform any more? THE MUSIC WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON! The reason that people with good taste still enjoy the older bands is because nobody has been recording songs like the old songs. The old songs are classics and they're better. In forty years, I don't think anyone wil be listening to all the bands you like. It's because it's not as good as the music from the 60s-80s/90s. Too bad your taste isn't as good as your brother's.

It is not so much that the bands are so popular, but rather, the songs that they created, and got so popular. A good song is timeless, and will often continue to be very popular, long after the band or artist is gone.
If you really want to know what are currently the most popular songs as determined by musicians, take a look at the top 20 digital sheet music downloads at http://sheet-music.8k.com There are songs listed from bands who were popular in the '60's too new bands and artists.

It's not stupid.
Maybe when you grow up a little you will understand the roots and influences that many old bands have made. Many of todays bands wouldn't exist without the older bands. Because they were influenced by them.

You should appreciate old music. Also, I'm pretty sure those bands that you named would be very fond of older music, because that's what they've grown up listening to.

May I say, that just because they're old and gone doesn't mean the music is not good. You should learn about the roots and influences of bands and genres. You have to so you can fully appreciate music.

By not listening to old bands, then you're just being ignorant not too mention that you are limitting your musical knowledge. Noone will take you seriously if all you listen to are "new" bands.

You have to listen to old bands to learn about the history of music.

Because the music is good. It doesn't matter if the members are alive, as long as people can still listen to their songs, then forget about the people. Music sells, people don't. If it wasn't for the old band's songs, they wouldn't have been popular. So it really doesn't matter who the people were, but the music.

A band doesn't have to have concerts or even be around still to be liked. People like them because of their music, not because they travel and put on shows. As long as their music is still around and available, they'll always have atleast one fan. Just because they're old doesn't mean they can't be popular. Wait until your bands get to be around 50 and stop making music or die or something, someone will still like them because it's still around somewhere and yeah they could of grown up with them.

You are too young and unsophisticated to understand. As you develop a better understanding of music and its foundation, you will come to appreciate why your brother is so 'crazy' about all the bands you mention. Your brother has a good 'ear'.

Give listening a chance, good music may grow on you.

Good music is good music, regardless of whether "the band's around" or not. If you enjoy the music, what's the difference? Classical fans might like Beethoven's music, and HE hasn't been around for quite awhile!!!

Relax and enjoy YOUR music. Those who enjoy the old stuff are entitled to do the same.
