Another way to do it would be using the football itself, but you'd need to make it in two parts (or with a separation).

In other words, first put a layer of aluminum foil or plastic wrap over the football. Then put your papier mache** on each end of it, so that it's covering most of the football but leaving a gap right around it's "equator". Let the papier mache dry enough that you can remove each end (which will be one half), then allow to dry thoroughly. Cut and/or sand each rim of the halves smooth on sandpaper or with scissors. Then you can glue the halves together.

If you want to put some reinforcement inside just glue or tape some popscicle sticks or anything stiff on the inside where they join.. Or you could stuff with bunched up newspapers. Or you could tape from the outside, then add another layer of papier mache after they halves are joined.

**those inexpensive blue "shop towels on a roll" that can be purchased in automotive areas are great for doing papier mache instead of strips of newspaper... the work will go quicker and the "towels" are more drapable over any shapes

We made a paper mache football at school and we blew up a balloon and did what iroc70 did but instead of using a football we used a balloon and once it was dried we made a hole on one side and burst the balloon and took it out, then glued back the piece we took off from the hole and painted it. It actually looked like a real football.

Hi:

I like both Carol H and Diane B answer However I answer a guy who ask the same question as you and here my answer reprinted for your convenience :

Hi:

First off:

Paper mache takes time but here what I do

1. Wrap the football in cling wrap. Cover all of it.

2. Tear your newpapers into strips or triangle shapes, you will need a lot of them
3. Using elmer's white glue, apply it to the strips or triangles and wrap them around the football until you got five layers made and allow it to dry over night

4) Then using a craft knife set it to the smallest blade opening and starting from the one of the pointed ends { Taking care not to cut the football} . Cut the paper mache lenghtwise from the pointed end of the footall and continue alway around it until you returned to where you started cutting it. and remove the football from it.

5) Rejoin the cut pieces and apply five more layers of newpaper strips and allow it to dry over night

6) Paint your football Using sandpaper { starting with 100 grit and going to 500 grit)

Start sanding the football until you have a smooth surface then apply a coat of white latex paint ,allowing the coat to dry overnight and sand it down with the next girt of sand paper until you have a smooth surface apply some more white paint. allow to dry over night than repeat the sanding and the coating process until you finish with the 500 grit . Hopely by then the football will be a smooth surface. Than paint it whatever color you want and allow it to dry overnight.

Hope this helps

blow up a cheap round balloon.
wad up some newspaper about half the size of the balloon.
tape wadded paper to knotted end of balloon.
Lay damp strips of newspaper from one end of structure to the other, one layer.
Dip strips of newspaper into a glue and water mix then apply to your structure, continue two or three layers.
Dry thoroughly and when dry stick a steak knife carefully into football to pop balloon.
If you are making a pinata, cut a rectangle and pull wadded paper and balloon parts out of football, fill and tape shut then add another layer of paper strips.

1 T. powdered alum
3/4 tsp. oil of wintergreen

Mix the cold water and flour together, stirring until smooth.
Add the boiling water and mix well. Pour the mixture into the top of a double boiler.
Cook over low heat until smooth. Add the alum and stir.
Remove from heat. When the mixture is cool, add the oil of wintergreen.
