We plan to arrive by ferry in Bari and thought we might hug the east coast to Bologna but none of the places seem to be the usual tourist spots so we were wondering if there is anything of any particular interest to see if we took a bus or train to Bologna.

a great thing about puglia (the region in from otranto to the gargano, in which bari lays) is that it is not one of the main touring regions in italy, so you can get a full experience of tis culture. first off i would definately recommend taking a train. in puglia, after visiting bari (but if you skip that's fine anyways, it's not that good), i would reccomend visiting the "grotte di castellana", one of the most noted natural attractions in italy. these caves are the second longest in europe, and are exeptionaly beautiful. then, if you want to go south a little, alberobello is also worth a visit, being the only town in the world of uts type (it is made of trullis). Then, up the coast from bari, the historical town of trani is definately worth a visit. it has one of the best kept historical centers in the region (infact it was first invested in by prince charles of England.)
Continuing up the coast, the gargano peninsola is a must see spot. the national park is wonderful, and the small coastal towns like Vieste are charming. If you want to go in land a bit, castel del monte is a notable attraction and very beautiful (it is the monument onthe italia 1 cent euro coin) After puglia i don't know much, but anconaand ravenna i've heard are very nice. I would also reccomend going to riccione, a town south of rimini. it is a very relaxing modern beach town, with an excellent night life.

i hope i 've helped.
ciao

It depends on what you're looking for. Pesaro and Urbino are great cultural destinations. Rimini is a hopping beach resort. The Conero area south of Ancona is stiking as is Gargano in Puglia. While not en-route Ravenna is great stop as well.
