that a fish will only get as big as the fish bowl it is in.
In the movie Big Fish I remember the man saying this.

Yes - and no.

Some fish are just small. But it is true that if you buy a large fish at a young age, it will fail to grow if you keep it in a small tank. If you place it in a larger one, it will continue to grow.

To a certain extent yes it's true. Some fish though such as oscars will continue to grow until they out grow the tank they're in. For the most part the statement is true.
