Anyone who knows about the "Red Scare" that happened in the 30's, 40's and 50's please let me know.

My real question is, Could the red scare happen again in todays society? This question threw me off. Let me know what you think.

it could-the Red Scare was when people were afraid of communism and thought anyone who was unpatriotic was a communist. Now it's with terrorist-right after 9/11 anyone who looked Arab was targeted and attacked-just because people were scared that they were terrorist(kinda like the Red Scare) So yeah it could happen-because when people become fearful they do stupid things that are not rational.

In a way, it IS happening. The Terrorism Scare is the same kind of ruse as the Big Red Scare.

I don't say that there is no threat of something happening. It is greatly magnified for political reasons. As you'll notice, when people are scared, they get parinoid and thus tend to believe things they would not ordinarily fall for. Since 911, people act almost as if the library at their kid's school might be bombed any minute. They put beefed up security in small office buildings. They have recordings on public buses that tell people to be aware of "suspicious packages."

None of these are realistic targets. Even in places where a terrorist would likely hit, the chances are tens of thousands to one that anyone will be harmed by a terrorist. The whole point is to keep people parinoid and gullible.

This is not really new. American folklore is full or parinoia of all kinds. People in the 50's thought that the US government was crawling with communists. They feared the atomic bomb, and many people spent thousands of dollars on bomb shelters. Many people even had real fears about UFOs.

We've been through the Y2K scare. There has been periods of fear about Jewish Americans that had no basis in reality. Much talk went around about the end of the world. Many people blieve that alien abductions are happening on a regular basis, or that the government is hiding info about a rumor of a crashed space ship (with alien corpses aboart) near Roswell, New Mexico. I you do some reasearch, you might find that nothing real earth-shaking even happened at Roswell.

Face it, Western Culture is parinoid.

Well the scare was about the spread of Communism. There were actually quite a lot of Communist spies in Western governments (moles) and Communism seemed to be spreading (from the USSR to Eastern Europe and Asia). As for another "Red" scare, doubtful, there are only a few truely Marxist nations left (Cuba and North Korea), China is the biggest Capitalistic nation on earth. That said, while there will be no "Red" scare, we may have an "Islam" scare - we might be in it now.

The Red Scare refers to the spread of communism, even by means of force. The Red Scare lasted until the fall of the USSR.

Could it happen again? Yes.

I joke about the "Red State/Blue State", thing, as being darned near the original Red Scare, in as much as the idea these terms represent. The risk is high when there are few moderate thinkers in either camp.

Could it happen? It is happening. Our government in its quest to scare the jello out of us has even given us a color coded system to let us know just how scared we should be on any given day of the week. If we don't go "over there" they are going to be in your back yard. What do you call that? Just replace communism with terrorists.

America's increasing fear and hatred for Islam is the a part of what Osama wanted us to do when he attacked the towers. As far as I'm concerned, the people that booed yesterday have joined the terrorists by weakly going along with what Al Quada wants us to do.

Look at what is going on with muslims today. People of Arabic origin are being seen with fear and suspicion. I think it is entirely possible for our government to under go a witch hunt if we had enough fear or provoked by some disaster.

yes it could. it wouldn't be communism, but the fear of something new and differnet- it could happen anyday. just needs the right people to paint it as a threat or to take a threat and make it ten times worse

Most defintely yes, many politicans these days are turning to socialist and communist views.
