because it is saying God's name in vain. why? because when you say that, you are not saying God's name to give Him worship but to show surprise. If you were gonna Honor the president for example, you would not say oh my Bush because that would not be right if you were to worship Him. I know it gets confusing, but that's faith-- accepting what you don't understand.

BUT!!!!! it is okay to say Oh my God... if you are talking to Him (e.g. oh my God why have you abandoned me!!)

Well, if you're Christian (I assume you are), the Bible says something like "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain", which essentially means, when you say "God", mean it. Don't use the name lightly.

Personally, I'm not Christian. I see the utility of it, though. It helps you to remember that God is good and worthy of respect. I know a lot of Christians who don't follow this particular advice, though. I leave it to you to decide whether this practice would bring meaning to your life.

Because using the Lords name in vain offends some people.

Only because some people find it offensive so you don't say it out of respect for other people. If you are religious, you don't say it because supposedly it is offensive to God. But personally I don't think that that's what it means to take God's name in vain considering that God's name isn't "God."

Two reasons:

1) It makes you sound unintelligent because it is overused and associated with the 'dumb blonde' stereotype.

2) According to some, you'd be using the Lord's name in vain.
(To take care of this problem, you can say, 'oh my gosh')
