I'm a Pirates fan, but unfortunately in this era of the pathetically corrupt MLB, they can't win. The league is completely unfair, and has given way to the NFL, a league where every team has a shot. Baseball truly is America's pastime. Without the arrogant owners of the "rich" teams actually agreeing to right the ship, the MLB really will be the pastime.
Still, GO PIRATES (we at least have a long shot)

As a Pirate fan for 40 years, I am optimistic about them this year. Although I see them making a dramatic improvement, seeing them winning the World Series or even making the playoffs seems like asking a little too much. I think the Bucs will have their best team since the early 90s and finally get to the .500 level. They will be competitive in 2007 but I would give them another 2-3 years before they can even think about playoffs.
Go Bucs!

I think they will be an improved team from last season. Adam LaRoche will bring a legitimate power threat to the lineup to compliment Jason Bay. You have to realize they had to trade Mike Gonzales, who was probably their best pitcher in the bullpen (maybe on the whole staff), to get him. Zach Duke had a down year. He should improve this season, which they will need. Jack Wilson is a solid player. Jose Castillo is a good second baseman. They have some good young players in Nate McClouth and Chris Duffy. They also have the NL batting champ in Freddy Sanchez along with Xavier Nady who should be good getting more playing time.

Overall though, I think the Pirates need to focus on getting to.500. It would be way to hard to go from being one of the worst teams in baseball to making the playoffs the next season. I would like to see the Pirates make the playoffs, but we will have to wait to see that happen.

Yes I certainly can see that in a world turned upside down the Pirates will lose to the Mighty Devil Rays.

You have a great 3rd baseman and outfielder, and LaRoche will be the better part of that deal you made with Atlanta. You have a young rotation, but they're not that good, and now you don't have a closer. But I don't think you can find many Pirates fans who think they'll win next year. Try getting to .500 first.

Although I'm a Braves fan and hope they can do it, I would root for the Pirates.

Can't see them winning it all but you can see them winning because they play in a horrible division in a league thats less than par.
