IMDB recognizes this movie as being called "Amelie 2" in Hong Kong (even though it came out before Amelie 1) (Which would make sense that you saw it in Aus, with a friend getting it overseas).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243135/
Le Battement d'ailes du papillon, or
The Beating of the Butterfly's Wings
a/k/a Happenstance

It would fit -- it stars Audrey Tatou and is about a series of random events ... (which sort of sounds like Amelie). It's certainly not a sequel and was probably given that name in Hong Kong to capitalize on Amelie and Tatou's popularity.

According to this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243135/dvd
It came out on Region 1 DVD in 2002.
So search for "Happenstance"
It's on Netflix. It's around.

(Ha... I just remembered that I've seen this movie. It was pretty good.)

And "A Very Long Engagement" also stars Audrey Tatou, but I'd say it's not very much like Amelie. It's a WWI period piece; quirky, and by the same director, but quite different in tone, plot, and style

Le Battement d'ailes du papillon - called Amelie 2 in the far east, but not actually a sequel, just the same actress.

A Very Long Engagement - same actress and director has been referred to as a prequel to Amelie.

Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement), an Amelie-esque tale of a young girl searching for her fiancée after his disappearance during World War I.

That is the title you look under...

'A Very Long Engagerment'..........and it is not a sequel.

So while A Very Long Engagement is not a sequel to Amelie, it does star Amelie herself, Audrey Tautou.

And like Amelie, magic and luck play a big role in its story of a woman, Mathilde, who is told her fiancee has been killed in World War I but determines to find him alive.

Au Revoir.
