Firewall...If you know what your downloading and only visiting reliable sites viruses can be avoided. Without a firewall of some kind you will be vulnerable to anyone that wants to get in. But the real answer is......you need both.

Firewall .. because firewall curbs thousands of intruders for being in...while everyone is familiar some times hard intruders can not be deleted and even ur anti-virus just hijacked by the virus at that time wht would u do?! Antivirus without Firewall facility is like Tea without Sugar ...bye

Anti - Virus -

Hacker etc can be blocked with other methods with a little know how. Plus viruses are hidden so anti - virus all the way.

As you suggest though always use both. Even a free version.

firewall. block the viruses before they even get to your computer.

a little common sense(not being stupid), and a decent firewall and you'd never need anti-virus. every windows computer ive ever setup has never had anti-virus on it, ive always just used a good firewall, and i've never had a problem with viruses.
