i changed a string on my yahama then tuned with electronic tuner. but any chord i play is off and sounds horrible! i checked it against my acoustic and there was a 5 fret difference in string tone. how can it be in tune and so far off? how do i fix it? i tried to stretch the strings several times.

I would Change all of the strings at the same time....because if you have 2 different brands of strings they could sound off....also, if the other strings on the guitar are older strings....then the new string will sound much brighter and out of place compared to the rest of the old strings.....i would buy a whole set of strings first....but if that doesn't work it might be the intonation of that string is off on the yamaha....which you would have to adjust the bridge to fix....but don't adjust the bridge unless you know what you are doing because this could throw the sound of the entire guitar out....and make it sound really terrible.......

Well, theoretically you could have tuned it wrong, or it could be the wrong gauge , it could even be a bad string - one time a while back i was in a pinch with a much needed string change and the shops were closed and i had a gig in the next hour. The bass player handed me a pack of strings that were simply called (i swear to god) "Good guitar Strings" LOL! No kidding! These things sounded and played like they were made from fence wire! and had more kinks in them than a hot garden hose. Stay away from suspicious brands...was my lesson.
