I have been thinking of opening a restaurant, but in order to get going I need to have a budget, to get a budget I need an estimate. can anyone give me a jumping off point?

Depends on the property. Find some properties you're interested in and then find an appraiser who can value them.

Well if you're leasing, location, location, location will determine how much a square foot will cost you. It could be any where from $18-150, it all depends on where you are. Next you will have to spend money on improvements(carpet, flooring, booths, lights, paint, etc.). These are things you generally depreciate.

A restuarant is one of the toughest businesses to get off the ground. About half of all new upstarts will fail in the first year. That number is a little higher for resturaunts.

You are asking the wrong question. Sq.Ft. is not a way to estimate startup costs. Go to score.org and download the Excel template for estimating startup costs.

You will have to get in touch with those small business association, set up an appointment with them, if you have no idea how to get in touch then call up the chamber of commerce and they will inform you how to start your aim.
