As far as Rebecca is concerned there is no mad woman. Neither in the attic nor any where else!Unless you count Mrs Danvers, who is a bit odd!

The important feminist critics Gilbert and Gubar in their book "The Mad Woman in the Attic" have argued that Bretha in Jane Eyre can be read as a subconscious symbol of Jane's desires and sexuality, representing the parts of her which she was forced to suppress/ repress in order to conform to Vitorian society. Whether you agree with them or not this theory has been central to discussions about the madwoman in Jane Eyre and is well worth reading if you are studying it.

If you're interested in the 'madwoman' in Jane Eyre, you should read "Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jean Rhys. It's based on Jane Eyre, and it gives some theoretical background information.

I don't remember a madwoman in the attic in Rebecca.
Didn't she die in a fire in Jane Eyre?

That's my wife. She is mad. Also, have you read The Madwoman's Underclothes by Germaine Greer? Fear it has gone out of print. Only 3 books which have made me cry - Jane Eyre, I'm the king of the castle (Susan Hill) and Incident of the Dog in the Night time (Mark Haddon). I had a bullied son who committed suicide, and I also have an autistic daughter (age 23 and still living with us). Also, our first baby was stillborn. What a world. However, please do not feel sorry for us!

Jane Eyre - Rochester's first wife up in the attic. She threw herself off the top floor during a fire. (Thankfully. She was becoming rather inconvenient!)
In Rebecca, the woman was Rebecca, the first wife, but I don't think she was mad, just nasty, clever and scheming. It's a brilliant book, my favourite of all, and I get more out of it each time I read it. She died in her boat, one stormy night out in the bay....
