Because their sympathies do not extend to their country. They are more apt to sympathize with any entity other than the United States. Thus when someone publically criticizes, mocks, or objects to, the United States, such people are generally viewed in a favorable light.

Such reasoning (or total lack thereof) is difficult for the average person who loves his country with all its faults and flaws.

if you support a tax cut that bankrupts your country, but stimulates the yacht manufacturing and vacation/tourist industries abroad does that make you a patriot? If you're willing to put American troops in harms way to fight an un-win-able war against a vague ideology in Iraq (or protect American oil interests) does that make you a patriot, If you send jobs overseas and import undocumented workers to do the remaining jobs for less in order to increase corporate profits at the expense of the middle class is that patriotism? which policies should I support? Which are the most American?

I don't think that disagreeing makes you patriotic. disagreeing on good grounds makes you patriotic- you are representing what this country was founded on.

agreeing on some issues can also make you patriotic. it depends which ones and what your logic behind them is

We don't. We just disagree with American policy when it doesn't match American ideals.

We're true patriots in that way. We don't march in lockstep with whatever the heir apparent of the current political dynasty says.

Libs don't know how to express constructive criticism. In the U.S. like in a family, yes there is room to criticize, but do not totally dump on your on country to another country, especially an enemy.

I agree with bettysdad. I'm sick of being called names, like people saying I'm with the terrorists or I want America to lose. Obviously people who blindly follow what the nation does are patriots, in their own way. Obviously they love their nation. Now it takes a little more intelligence (not too much) to see that someone who questions what their nation does because they want to see it succeed is also someone who loves his nation. Just because I don't always trust its leaders does not mean that I hate America or want to see bad things happen to it. I consider our current leadership a bad thing that needs to stop happening to the nation I love.

Because it doesn't take a patriot to stand up for what's wrong.
