Normally, a child doubles their birth weight at 6 months. So you daughter has already done that a little early. It really depends on her height. But I'm gonna guess that she's pretty high on the curve. My daughter is 9 months and weighs 19 lbs 9 oz. and she's right in the middle of the curve.

My daughter is exactly 5 months today & had an appt 2 days ago where she weighed 15 pds 1 oz. She is in the 45th percentile for weight & 95% for height, she's 27 in long. The person who answered that a 5 month old shouldn't weigh over 14 pds is not bright. That's not even at the 50th percentile mark!

Your doctor is criticizing her weight at 7 weeks already? Yikes! She's a newborn! She sounds like she's right on par for her birthweight, to me. My son was 8 pounds 9 ounces at birth and by the time he was 8 weeks, he was almost 14... now he's 17 months and 27 pounds and 35 inches tall... he's not overweight for his height at all. Babies change so much when they're that young that as long as you're only feeding her when she's hungry and letting her feed as long as she wants, I see no reason to be concerned just because she doesn't quite stack up to an arbitrary number at the doctor's office. You have a healthy baby with a healthy appetite... enjoy her and try not to worry too much about her weight... it really does not matter at this point.

Breastfed? Bottlefed?
7lbs at birth is about the 25th percentile
17 ish pounds for a breastfed baby is about 95th percentile, which is fine.
For a fomula fed baby thought that is A LOT.
Breastfed babies tend to grow more in the first 6 months. My son was 8lbs 2oz at birth and 20lbs at 4 months.

RELAX, new mommy-- Your baby is just fine!
If you are taking baby to regular checkups they should show you her growth chart ( you may need to ask to see it). As long as she follows a smooth curve, she's doing fine. She may be above or below avaerage, but the key is that she grows at a consistent rate, not zig zagging all over the chart.
Our society is way too obsessive about weight and whether one's weight is "right" or not. Human beings come in lots of different shapes and sizes and there is a wide range of normal.
A baby will follow her internal cues about hunger and fullness and babies won't overeat unless forced. You are about to embark on the new experience of solids in a few weeks, so have fun with it, but use care to introduce only one food at a time.
Enjoy this precious time. It will be over before you know it.

She should weigh no more than 14 pounds. But it's ok. It's just baby fat. She'll grow out of it when she starts walking and running around.
