I see you got a variety of answers. I am an American living in Mexico. I drove here one and 1/2 yrs a go. I purchased car ins for Mexico before coming here from San Xavier Mexico Insurance...had best price and great service. Ph. 1-888-327-1255 website: www.mexican-autoinsurance.com. If you are not driving past the 12 mile checkpoint you do not need a car permit. If you are driving past that point you need to stop at the car permit office in the Mexican town just across the border from where you cross. You must obtain the sticker and paperwork there and the price is about $100.00. It usually takes several hours. The permit used to be good only for one year, but is now good as long as your visa is valid and you possess the accompanying paperwork. If your car is financed, you must have a notarized letter from the lender giving permission to bring your car into Mexico. You must also have your current registratiion and driver's license. DO NOT get an nternational drivers license...they will just laugh at it. Your regular license fron your state is just fine. You must also have a valid credit card with you. They will take an imprint of this card to keep on file. If you ever try to leave Mexico without your car and your visa has expired, they will charge a $400.00 fine to your card. This is to be sure you do not sell your car in Mexico. They are VERY picky about this. If you are going beyond the 12 mile checkpoint, but only staying in Sonora ( or possibly Baja) the law is different. in Sonora, the deposit is not required and I think the permit is different too.. Also, the laws are different in Baja. As I said, I've been here over a year and a half now...I was stoped once by a customs agent while driving...and had no problem at all...he saw my sticker and all was finr. he actually only stopped me because he saw my U.S. license plate and wanted to talk and practice his English! he asked if I was a tourist and when I told him no, that I lived just down the road, everything was just fine.

No permits needed in the Mexican State of Sonora, Bordered by Hwy 15 from the U.S. border to the Sea of Cortez and west to the Baja Calafornia state line near Mexicali. Mexican Liability Insurance is not required, but reccommended to avoid going to jail while the police sort out fault.
Everywhere else in Mexico, permits are required and on the average take several hours to procure. It is best to procure the permits in advance and have the effective dates for the time you plan to visit.
You will need a drivers license from the state you reside in, a credit card (only certain cc's like VISA are accepted, Discovery, Diners Club and other off brands not accepted), registration or other proof of vehicle ownership, and if you are making payments on the vehicle, sometimes a letter from the finance company authorizing you to leave the U.S. with the vehicle is required.
A Passport is not required yet, but soon will be. If you already have it, you will find it speeds up your re-entry to the U.S.
Traffic laws originate from continental laws (with the exception of driving on the right side of the road) and differ from the U.S., so search the enternet and learn them before you go.

Yes you need all your legal papers for your car and than you need to get a permit in the bordertown,mexican side,,it takea a bout all day to ge it and cost you about 100$.Allso make sure to get car insurence for mexico,otherwise you will be in big trouble when even a small excident happens.if you plan only to go into Mexico for a day and stay in the bordertown you dont need an mexican permit,There will be a checkpoint 30 miles or so inside of mexico,cant go any furthere than that without permit

The answer is yes you do. It is a sticker that is put on next to your rear view mirrow. It cost $23.00 and is good for one year. you get it at the same place you get your visa. You have to show drivers license, car title, insurance. You have to make three copys of each. and pay for it with a visa card. This year you also need a pass port. Gas in mexico is about the same cost, the stations are called Premex and are government owned. Get your money exchanged on this side of the bouder, never pay for gas with american money , they will take advantage of you. Pay what the pump says and give the man a 40 paso tip. Be carefull driving the streets, there very slick and when wet or like driving on ice. Have a nise trip and enjoy.

Check with the Mexican Tourist Bureau - check the city you plan to travel to.

I'd suggest that you DO get a IL and don't forget to bring your passport - you'll need it to get back into the states.
