I think with the bye weeks, it has added an additional week into the mix somewhere.
I noticed that recently too. Good question.

The reason the super bowl is in Feb now is because the NFL now starts their season a week later. The traditional start of the season was Labor Day weekend. It is now the weekend after, pushing everything back one week. There is still only one bye week per team. The reason for this is that the NFL's TV ratings were not as high on Labor Day weekend, it was all about $$$.

And yoshi, you're incorrect. The NFL has had 2 weeks off between conference championships and the super bowl for a very long time, thats not something new, and not because of 9/11.

So that there would be a big build up to the super bowl. It's kinda stupid, but it means extra $$$ for those in the Super Bowl business.

Because they moved the start of the season after the weekend of Labor Day.

February sucks for sports anyway, so the SB gives it some purpose.
