I don't know how old you are, so ignore this if you're not in college or older.
I had the same problem for years and years. I tried Lunesta, online herbs, foreign medications, OTC medication (SimplySleep, etc)...nothing worked.
About a year ago, I started drinking to go to bed. This sounds bad...but I have NEVER felt so good in my life. BUT you have to be smart about it, because it takes a precise plan to avoid hangovers, etc.
Here is my plan I use every night, which is WAY cheaper than any medication you will ever find:
1) Buy a bottle of EverClear for $15 (750mL). This is 76% ethanol (alcohol) and the rest is just water.
2) Buy Sprite Zero or Sierra Mist Free. You need a mixer drink that has carbonation, but no sugar or caffeine that will keep you awake. The carbonation is essential for avoiding stomach aches.
3) An hour before you want to go to bed, (we will call this 0-minutes), take EXACTLY 30mL of EverClear and mix it with about a third or a half can of the soda, and drink all of it within 2 minutes. Remember the time as 0-minutes.
4) Follow this immediately with a half-pint of water and an asparin (1). The water will keep you from having body-aches in the morning, and the asparin will stop head-aches.
5) At 15-minutes, mix EXACTLY 25mL of Everclear with a third of a can of soda, and again drink within 2 minutes.
6) Follow this with a little less than a half-pint of water. (You don't want to pee too frequently).
7) At 30-minutes, mix EXACTLY 20mL of Everclear with a third of a can of soda, and again drink within 2 minutes.
8) Follow this with a little less than a half pint of water AND another asparin.
9) If you're still not ready to sleep, repeat steps 7 and 8 at 45-minutes, without taking another asparin.
Here's the summary:
Time = 0min:
30mL Everclear + soda + asparin + 1/2 pint water
Time = 15min:
25mL Everclear + soda + 1/3 pint water
Time = 30min:
20mL Everclear + soda + asparin + 1/3 pint water
Time = 45min(optional):
20mL Everclear + soda + 1/3 pint water
I use a graduated cylinder I bought on eBay to measure the Everclear precisely. A little too much has a big effect. Right now, I use 1 can of Sprite to cover all 4 drinks. Remember to pee before you lay down for bed. Also, allow yourself at least 6-7 hours of sleep.
To give you an idea of how well this works, I can start this procedure at 12am, and be ready to jump out of bed at 5:50am feeling rested. (I do that twice a week, M and W).
If you're worried about the negative side effects of alcoholism...I haven't really experienced any. It makes the end of my day something to look forward to, and I actually get sleep now.

You should try reading, put on soothing music, make sure it isn't too hot or cold in the room. Don't exercise or eat a big meal before bedtime. Do not drink alcohol either. Relax your body and mind. If this does not work, see a doctor about sleeping pills- Ambien was prescribed.

Try to relax before you go to bed - take a bath, read your favorite book. You can drink hot tee with honey or a cup of hot milk. Don't drink coke or wine before going to bed - not to mention coffee or energy drinks - that's obvious.
Good luck! I used to have problem like this so I know how you feel.

Actually your getting 9.5 hrs. sleep. Maybe you are getting too much sleep, that's why you are unable to fall asleep. Also, caffeine can have a lot to do with it. Note how much soda, coffee or tea you drink during the day and don't drink any after 3pm.

Dont drink anything with caffeine (coffee, coke) before bedtime. Try reading in bed.. Try meditation before you go to sleep. TV is a bad idea just before bed as it fills your brain with ideas so you cant switch off.

either you still have too much energy to go to sleep, you have too much on your mind and it is keeping you awake or you are going to bed to early. It's hard to say without so much detail.
