I read an article about this in terms of manga. The author says that Americans and European-dominated societies notice a lack of racial identifiers and see the characters as "white". The Japanese, not having the same influence, only see the characters as "people". When a non-Japanese character is drawn in manga, the artist will clearly identify this character as foreign with racial stereotypes.

that's because people think that white is the prefect color for beauty and resembles purity but not all anime characters have white skin, you should watch "Peach Girl". if you think all anime characters have white skin then your wrong. try watching a wide variety of anime next time..^_^.

Hmm.. I guess you would be mostly right if you were to look at their skin color but most of the time they really are from japan.. even if they dont always look japanese...

In some of them, like Host club, they aren't full blooded Japenese, so they don't look like it..
The others I don't know I haven't really thought much about it

some characters are black like boondocks& afro samurai & peach gal.
Most characters are japanese. So they would'nt considered "white".
