I dont think there is a limit. I dont think a poor man has a chance whatsoever.
Well you have successfully come to understand the entire american political system without going to school here. America is controlled by something called a multinational. No conspiracy theory here Exxon etc. they contribute money to democrats and republicans pretty much equally. The populace gets very excited and starts talking about abortion, gay rights and basically anything and everything that has nothing to do with anything that will increase jobs in america or get them better educated. Then hollywood with all the cash Exxon (I do not intend for exxon to be the blame for everything there are dozens of these entities this is just one of many; particularly gauling because they never cleaned up the mess they made in alaska) gladly provides generates alot of great advertising. People who actually care about the future of america are drown out by the rhetoric. then begins the election of people who do the bidding of the multinationals. Rinse and repeat in 4 yrs for presidency, 6 for congress. This is my opinion. thanks for a great question

Politics is all about getting people to believe your message. If a poor man has a good message then he can be president. Although money does help. Yes there is alot of money involved. But look at it this way.....If there was an obvious Hitler in the running should the people be limited in what they can spend to keep him from being elected? I think not. It's all part of the freedom of speech we have in the United States of America.

Experts estimate that whoever wins the next Presidential election (in 2008) will spend somewhere around $750 Million dollars (about 382 Million pounds for you) during the election process.

The president and all of our "representatives" are bought and paid for by special interest groups with loads of $$$.
And yes, a poor man can become president as long as he walks the line with special interest groups.
The most powerful special interest group in Washington is the Israeli lobby, who purchase just about all of our "representatives". One can not become a high ranking American politician with out kneeling before the alter of Israeli lobby and offering ones continence as sacrifice to their Zionist masters. Hence the reason for our irrational and detrimental eternal support for the terrorist state of Israel.

I hear Bill Clinton is pretty cheap. I think $660 and a bag of Big Macs. Or one tight skirt.
