Relationship between Scale and area on a map?

Which cover more area, a small scale map or a large scale map? which shows more detail?

To show more area, you need to use a large scale map, say 1:1000000 (world maps etc.). To show more detail, you need to use small scale maps, like 1:1000 etc.
