If I press it, a list shows up of computer processes that I can't do anything with. I want to see the "normal" box that contains the programs you have open so I have the option of closing them if there is a problem.

There are no tabs in the box, The columns are labeled: "Image Name", "User Name", "CPU", and "Mem Usage". The bottom right corner has a button labeled "End Process". The bottom left corner has a box to check labeled, "Show processes from all users".

One change made from Windows 98 to XP is the Task Manager (aka what opens when you press Ctrl + Alt + Delete). To see the processes that are running (the background programs that are usually always running) the processes tab is clicked. To see the open programs that you are currently working on click the Applications Tab. This will show you all of your programs currently running. Then you can choose end task to terminate the application. Hope this helps.

Since you are having trouble seeing the tabs... the area you are in is also good for closing an application.

for example,, if I am running outlook... I will see the "image name" column give me an "outlook.exe" that is running. I can close that one and outlook will close. If it is a system file you are trying to close, windows won't let you, it'll say" you don't have access" or something.

This window you are in is the "processes" tab of the Windows task manager. Which program are you specifically trying to close?
Word = Word.exe
Word for outlook = WINWORD.exe
IE = iexplore.exe

etc...

At the top, it should have a list of tabs. Click on the "applications" tab and that should show you the programs open.
