Stay away from Little Tree in Royal Oak. Yuck.
Detroit has world-class restaurants, so I'm not sure what the other poster is talking about.

Best sushi I've had:
Tom's Oyster Bar in Grosse Pointe Park (can't speak for the other locations) has the best I've eaten in ages. They brought in a really specialized professional who prepares serious sushi. Hope he's still there...
Nami (Ferndale)
Noble Fish (Clawson)
Black Pine Tree (Southgate)--this is my favorite
Sushi Ko (Farmington Hills)
Cherry Blossom (Novi)
Shogun (Sterling Heights)
The sushi at Fishbone's wasn't half-bad, kind of surprisingly

Cherry Blosom in Novi is good.

Mon Jin Lau in Troy is good (some nights have been better than others)

There is a new spot in Ferndale on Woodward (East side) just North of Nine Mile Rd that I believe is called Osaka. I have had some great lunches there.

I heard a new spot will be opening in Royal Oak soon called Ronin. It is supposed to be very high end.

Last but not least, Noble Fish in Clawson has great sushi (very fresh), but it is not what I would call a nice dining experience....get it carry out.

Ok, I meet your criteria for answering this question. The sushi, service, selection, etc... is wonderful at Tokyo Sushi located just north of Hall Rd. (M-59) on the west side of Mound. I believe that is Shelby Township.

I would probably look for a higher quality sushi restaurant in the surrounding suburbs....Troy, Birmingham.e.t.c.
Detroit itself isnt a mecca for fine restaurants unfortunately, but if you are looking for coney islands or middle eastern cuisine....its the best!
