Do a Google search for the Piasa Bird. It's a Native legend about the birds your searching for. There is a Cliff in Grafton Illinois where the Natives have painted a painting of the birds on the side of the Cliff over a river.

They are called Thunderbirds, the legend is that they live in the highest mountain ranges and fly on the jet stream and with powerful storms. They hunt larger game i.e. goats, small deer, calves and there are some stories about them trying to nab children. I read a very interesting story by a woman in Indiana that saved her 11 year old son from one of these birds. Ripped him right out of its talons. You could do a search and find all kinds of information on them.

I know in one of my searches they had a picture of a man standing in front of a stuffed one in a museum in Brazil. They are related to the North American Condor.
