It is not going to happen to you. If you just relax and have a professional do it there is nothing to worry about. Believe me, once you feel the intense pain of a few contractions you will forget all about being paralyzed!!

I was too. I was terrified. I swore I wouldn't have 1 coz of the risks and it just seems so wrong to thread a tube into your spine! However...... when ur in that much pain all concerns go out the window coz will do ANYTHING to make it stop!! And epidurals are the only way to make the pain go away (gas & air and tens only take the edge off and pethadine just makes you out of it and isn't a pain killer). Try without it for as long as you can but if it gets to much you really won't even think about the risks!! Believe me!! BTW it felt AMAZING when it was in!! Mine worked great- all pain went but could feel contractions so knew when to push. Also would probably have needed c section if I DIDNT have epidural coz I wasn't progressing until I had it then I relaxed and my body got on with it so doesnt always necessarily mean more chance of assisted delivery.

I'm scared too. With my other 4 labors I went natural or had a little IV pain medicine. I think I'm gonna go for that again because even though the Epidural benefits people, there are a lot of downsides too. Headaches for life, back aches when it gets cold. Then there's the chance it may not work or they have trouble getting it in place. I've seen it all. Do what you feel is right but I'd rather go natural or get the IV pain medicine. Good Luck1

I had an epidural and i would get it again. I just had a baby 5 months ago. It wears off towards the end. But i needed a break after 11 hours of labor. Yes i have a very small discomfort in my back but it is hardly noticable to me know it gets better as i get stronger. I hate needles i was so scared i was shaking like a leaf! But when it came down to it the pain was too much for me. Some woman are really strong and can handle it, i am not one of them.

I'm sorry, but I've had epidurals, and there is virtually NO chance that you might be 'paralysed for life' ... so if you are 'afraid' because of that, go ahead and have the epidural ... you are going to 'hurt' during labor to some extent, but when it comes to that actual 'pushing the baby out of your body' part, the epidural is the BEST way to go to 'curb your pain'.

its a rare occurance. it isnt something that would typically happen in a routine epidural, but you are ok to worry a little. just not too much.
they will remind you right before you get it done what the risks are.

maybe wait and see what your labor pains will be like. if they are bearable then you can skip the risk of the epidural, but if you are in tons of pain, i would say go for it. its one of those things that they have to tell you could happen because there is a very slight chance, but if you ask how many times they have actually paralyzed a woman, you should be pleasantly suprised to hear that the anastesiologist (sp?) has never had it gone wrong.

good luck!

i had the epidural,i had no complications. But i wish someone wouldve talked me out of it. I felt I was a big baby too when it came to pain, but in the end it just made labor longer and i had to have a nurse tell me when to push. Which meant i had to rely on her to tell me the right time to push ( in my opinion she was telling me to push just a few seconds to late each time , and that held things up even longer.)They say you don t remember pain. You remember that it hurt...but not the actually pain. so I say don t have the needle ,you can go with out ,and you'll probably be up and around faster. That is the advice iam going to give my daughter when the time comes around! Hope all works out well for you.

ive had an epiduaral twice and planning on getting one this time and im fine. if you have concerns talk to you dr about it or try IV meds. IV meds didnt work for me and the pain free delivery with epidural was lovely. i got to spend time with my baby without the pain

Just make sure an anesthesiologist administers the epidural. They are trained very well. Being paralyzed from the epidural is EXTREMELY rare!

I had one and am so glad! Chances are very slim that anything will happen.

If you were having your teeth extracted would you get novacaine or anethesia? If yes, you have your answer.

Be prepared to fall in love with whomever administers it.

I pushed just fine with it-my son was out in 11 minutes.
